Or maybe even a short story!? If so we’d love to hear about it at Alt Hist.
NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month – and takes place over the whole of November, the idea being to write a whole novel in just one month. Quite a cool idea I think, but a real challenge, it’s hard enough to finish a novel ever, let alone in a month.
Perhaps we should have a similar challenge at Alt Hist – write an Historical short story – and submit it to Alt Hist for possible publication. I’m sure you can get a story written in a month can’t you?
I’m considering having a go at NaNoWriMo – you never know what may come of it – but in my case I can’t quite decide whether to start with a novel or a long short story.
I am going to be writing a pair of novellas (one 20k, one 30k) for NaNoWriMo, set in my steampunk’d alternate-history 1840s world. Hopefully in the new year I will be able to finish the trilogy with a 40k one, giving me a traditional novel-length piece of work to do… something… with. Whether I seek publication or self-publish, or just release it for free to the adoring masses, we shall see.
The accompanying feeling of accomplishment would feel nice, I imagine.
I think initiatives like NaNoWriMo are a good way to motivate us lazy writers to write sometimes (I’m thinking of myself only here!) I’m going to give it a go – but I still need to check out the website to see what I’m actually supposed to do – except write of course.
