Most popular Alt Hist Posts of All Time

Having restarted Alt Hist I thought it would be interesting to look back at the history of what we have published on this site and see what the most popular posts were. I have taken out hits for static pages like our Submissions page and pages for whole issues. And here’s what we have left.

  1. Historical Fiction Short Stories – the Long and the Short of it. A blog post by me.
  2. Jorge Luis Borges, Ireland, and Historical Fiction. A blog post by Séamus Sweeney
  3. Disambiguation. A short story by Ian Sales
  4. Dublin Can Be Heaven. Preview of a short story by Séamus Sweeney
  5. The Silent Judge. Preview of a short story by David W. Landrum

Hope you enjoy reading some of these classics again.

If you’re looking for something other than World War II then we also have two stories from the Nineteenth Century and one from the Middle Ages.

  • ‘Kleine Menschen’ by Eric Jackson is a historical fantasy story set in World War II Germany.

  • ‘Three Months of Summer’ by Svetlana Kortchik is a love story that happens during the German occupation of Ukraine in 1942.
  • ‘The Stork’ by George Piper is a backwoods horror that will scare and surprise you.
  • ‘Battalion 202: A Blinded Falcon’ and ‘Battalion 202: Into the Darkness’ by Jonathan Doering are two alternate history stories about the resistance to a German invasion of Britain.

By the Blood of Heroes reviewed by Ian Shone for Alt Hist

By The Blood of HeroesIan Shone has kindly volunteered his time to Alt Hist to help out with book reviews and proof-reading, and I’m glad to say that his review of By the Blood of Heroes by Joseph Nassise is is now available on the Alt Hist site under our Book Reviews section. By the Blood of Heroes is a combination of alternate history and zombie-fueled horror, and I think you will find Ian’s review interesting.

Please go along and take a look at the review.

Publication Date of the Second Issue of Alt Hist

When will the second issue of Alt Hist be published?

Well for the next issue I’m aiming for between 7 and 8 stories altogether and so far I have accepted 4. I do have some to review that looked quite good, so I’m fairly confident that I should have enough stories accepted by the end of this month. There will then be a round of proofs and typsetting to do in February/March, which means that with a fair wind you can expect the second issue of Alt Hist to be coming in March or April.

I’ll keep you posted!

If you’re visiting the site don’t forget to sign up to RSS or Email alerts

You can stay up to date with all the latest news from Alt Hist in a number of ways. I’d recommend getting a subscription to our Email alerts or RSS feed if you want to get the latest key news updates from Alt Hist. See the menu to the right of this post for details.

Alternatively we also have a Facebook page and a Twitter account, which will also post all the latest news, sometimes smaller nuggets of information that won’t merit a whole post on this site, so these are well worth a look too.

On the Facebook page especially we’re starting to get some good discussions going. For instance about whether podcasting stories was a good idea and also some questions about the next issue. So if you use Facebook I’d encourage you to join the debate, or even start one of your own on the Alt Hist page on anything to do with Alt Hist or the subject of historical fiction, whether alternate, fantastical or reality-based.

Alt Hist reviewed at Locus Online and SF Crowsnest

The first issue of Alt Hist has now been reviewed at Locus Online by Lois Tilton, and at SF Crowsnest by Gareth Jones.

Both reviews I think are broadly very positive. Lois’s review at Locus concentrates more on individual stories, while Gareth reviews individual stories, but also gives his thoughts on the publication as a whole.

Lois thought that one of the stories in Alt Hist merited a special Recommended tag, which from looking at her short fiction reviews, she does not appear to grant lightly. So I was very pleased with that.

Gareth liked most of the stories and was also very complimentary about the issue as a whole. If  I may I’ll quote his entire last paragraph:

So it’s an interesting selection of stories and a successful debut issue. I wouldn’t necessarily choose to read historical fiction, but the mixture of historical tales among the alternate history were pleasantly enjoyable. With some relatively well-known authors for issues #1, editor Mark Lord has made an auspicious start.

I’m pleased that the authors in the first issue are getting the plaudits they deserve in both reviews, and also that the decision to start Alt Hist seems to have broadly welcomed.

Alt Hist added to Duotrope’s Digest

I’m happy to report that Alt Hist has now been added to Duotrope’s Digest as a fledgling market.

Duotrope’s Digest is a great resource for anyone looking for short fiction markets (as well as poetry and novels actually). I use it all the time for my own work as it has an excellent Submissions Tracker and a very comprehensive database of markets.

As a result of our listing I’m now looking forward to some short story submissions hitting our email address soon. If you have anything that you think might be appropriate please send it to althist.editor@gmail.com.
