Summary: On a cold February morning in 1939, Elliott Chapel is riding his horse on the border of his farm when he finds a bloodied and beaten woman, lying face up in the shallow water of Penny Creek. Days later, Ellie Evans escapes certain death with the help of the town doctor, and comes out of her coma. Once Ellie Evans explains how she ended up in Penny Creek, a series of events unfolds that traps Elliott Chapel between torturous circumstances and a dark future.

Narrated by Elliott five decades later, he recalls the incident, telling the story of the events that transpired and ultimately revealing the long kept secret that began in a small Kentucky town.

We love to hear your feedback

Just a reminder that there’s lots of ways to provide your feedback on Alt Hist – especially if you have purchased a copy of issue 1. Please let me know which stories you liked or didn’t like and why. Also if there’s anything you would like us to think about changing such as the format of the magazine, then please leave a comment.

You can rate and leave comments at various places as well as this blog. For instance our distributors Lulu, Smashwords and Amazon US and Amazon UK all allow readers to rate and review.

It would be great to hear from you – especially with Issue 2 currently in the works. We also have a few stories already accepted for Issue 3, so hopefully that won’t be too far off either.

Submitting Book Reviews to Alt Hist

Just a reminder that Alt Hist also accepts non-fiction related to historical fiction and alternate history. In particular this could include book reviews. I am quite keen that we start publishing some of these so if you fancy reviewing some new releases then please get in touch. I would recommend that you take a look at what is coming out in the next few months and then let me know what you would be interested in reviewing. You should then be able to contact the appropriate publisher and ask them to send you a review copy – just let them know that you plan to be reviewing the book for Alt Hist and I’m sure they will be happy to send you a copy – publishers are very interested in getting new books as much publicity as possible.

Alt Hist Preparing Print and Ebook versions of first issue

With all the proofs processed, additional non-fiction content added and a cover design created, I am getting close to being able to announce the publication of the first issue of Alt Hist. At this stage a number of complications arise regarding timing. Ideally I’d like to announce publication of the print and ebook versions at the same time, but because certain retailers take a bit of time to get ebooks onto their platforms there maybe some delay. I anticipate though that Alt Hist will be available in some sort of ebook format within a week. When this happens I will announce it on this site, but we may well go for a more full scale announcement once all the distribution channels have got the “book”.

Alt Hist – Fiction Typesetting Complete

I have now completed the typesetting stage of putting together the first issue of Alt Hist. All 6 stories are typeset for print publication and formatted in a PDF file. The next step is to go through each story and mark-up and suggested edits in the PDF file and then send each author their proofs. Once I have these back I can begin to finalise the contents of the issue.

Things still left to do other than that are:

  • Editorial – a couple of pages from me introducing the first issue of Alt Hist
  • Put together some questions and get answers for one of our non-fiction bits
  • Design a front and back cover

Interesting that a lot of the work on putting this together is very focused on the print version. I wonder which will be more popular the print or online version?

We’re planning to charge about £3.99 for print and £2.99 for the e-book version (multiply by 1.5 ish for the dollar rate, but these things tend to be in the hands of the distributors!)
